Being raised by Christian parents, I was always taught that it wasn't right for Christians to fight. I know what my parents were saying because they didn't want their kids to get into fights at school, or to fight with their neighbors (which one time my older brother and sister and I got into a major fight with the 3 other neighbor kids from down the road. I won't tell you who won that fight, but it wasn't pretty), or to fight with siblings or parents.
However, if you have read 1 Timothy 6 lately, you will understand that Paul wants us to "fight." "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses" (6:12).
Is Paul telling us that sometimes hanging on to our "faith in Jesus" is a fight? Is Paul telling Timothy (and us) that he had been saved, but that you have to keep fighting until the very end? Is Paul telling us that fighting for our faith is a good thing?
Well, if you are honest with yourself, sometimes when life gets tough and you feel like you are being attacked in every direction; and you wonder why God is allowing you to go through all this bad stuff; and you feel like your faith in Jesus is beginning to waver; maybe it's not the time to give up, but it's the time to FIGHT ON.
Kenny Rogers once sang, "Sometimes you've got to fight to be a man." Well, I believe that "Sometimes you've got to fight to follow Jesus." So, let's fight together and encourage one another to "keep fighting."
